RUGBY LEAGUE TRADING CARDS BOOK

100 Years of Australian Rugby League Trading Cards is a book compiled and published by "Dan's NRL Collectables".

Designed as a comprehensive lists guide for the collector of Rugby League footy cards, this book contains the listings for a total of 343 Rugby League Trading Card sets.

The sub-heading of each set includes a space to scribe the amount of cards that the collector has for that set.

Of course, listed in each set is the card number and player's name for each individual card, as well as club team sets.

The book contains more than 450 images of football collector cards and similar trading cards and even postcard releases, dating back to the first Kangaroos of 1908 (a postcard photo of the team).

Similar in style to a stamp collector catalogue, this book though understandably does not include a scan of every footy card of the thousands or more released (wouldn't that be something!). The author has also preferred to keep the simple joy of collecting cards to the fore, by opting not to indicate suggested $ valuations.

A useful book in term's of reference value for those interested in collecting or studying the passing parade of rugby league memorabilia and imagery, it will be of most benefit to all footy card collectors.

Hi Daniel,

I purchased your book a couple of weeks ago, and I would like to congratulate you on an excellent achievement of producing the most detailed record of Rugby League Trading Cards that I have ever seen. As an avid collector, I have been waiting for something like this for a long time. It will surely become the collectors "bible".

It must have taken you years to compile all of the information. Not only have you listed all of the traditional Trading Card sets, but you've also included stickers, tazos and club sets. Well done!

I read with interest your introduction. It brought back fond memories. I began collecting back in primary school in the 70's. Despite my mother insisting that I throw out most of my toys back then, I did manage to keep my 1970 - 1977 Scanlens sets (but don't I now wish I kept all of those doubles of Checklists instead of throwing them away!). For some reason I then stopped collecting, but my passion was re-ignited again in the mid-90's, and thanks to eBay and the Parramatta Collectable Fair, I have added to my collection.

Unfortunately due to mainly financial and family reasons I haven't collected the latest Select sets from the last few years. However, I hope to start collecting again one day soon.

If you ever decide to do a follow up book can I suggest you consider adding more error cards. I have a few. Most have the wrong player photo. I also have details of the 1971 Scanlens Posters which are different from your list. I can send these to you if you want.

Once again, congratulations on an excellent book!!

Regards,

Steve

Hi Dan,
I received your 100 Years of Australian Rugby League Trading Cards book in the mail today, its a great checklist of al the great cards of the last 100 years... very well done.
A few years ago i decided to rediscover a bit of my youth and i took a look on ebay for old Scanlens cards, and i was shocked how many there were there. The first set i ever collected back in my school days was the 1974 set,and it became a real hobby to collect the full set again. It took me about a year to get every card, but i have kept on buying more and more 1974 cards,to the point where i now have about 500,and because im a big Manly fan,i have at least 15 of every Manly card from that set.
You seem to be the biggest authority on the old Scanlens card that i have come across,so i was wondering if you knew the answers to a few questions that i have been curious about for a while now.
Was there ever a print run announced for the 1974 set?
I cant recall, but i think that the team logo stickers in the 1974 set were 1 per pack,do you know if that is correct? I know that they are pretty rare now,so im thinking that they may not have been that frequent.
I have seen numerous Scanlens wrappers on ebay over the last few years, but i have never seen a 1974 one, have you seen one in recent years.
I have 6 of the 1974 Paul Dawson cards,5 are with the red ink mark on them, and one is without....do you have any idea what is the ratio of the red mark ones to the clear ones?
They may be questions that no one knows the answers to any more, but i just thought i would ask you in the hope that you may know a few of the answers.
Any assistance you can give me would be much appreciated.
Regards,Tim.

Hi,

Thanks for all of the positive comments regarding my book. It took me more than four years to compile and produce.

One for all the card collectors - I came across a fellow on eBay that has published a book which lists EVERY rugby league card from 1908-2008.

Absolutely fantastic book and an absolute must if you collect rugby league trading cards.

If you google "Dan's NRL Collectables" you will find his website - I think the book was either $20 or $25 - so an absolute bargain.

Be very aware though that if you buy this book it will cost you quite a bit of money!!

I thought I only needed a very small handful of cards to complete my Manly Card Collection until I got the book and found out exactly how many cards I still needed to find - but now I know the cards and have all the numbers and details etc which makes them easier to find.

Plus - if you send Dan a list of cards you want he will try to complete your list for you and his prices are very very good compared to what I have been paying on eBay.

So if you collect cards/memorabilia get in contact with him and I bet he will be able to help you fill some holes in your collection - he is also quite a nice bloke for a Parra supporter!! :o))

Hi
I purchased your book & have to say it has been a very worthwhile buy. For some time I have been trawling the internet to try & find information on my cards (St George 60-70s). I now know what is complete & what's not. Thanks very much for your obvious labour of love.
:)
